Going outta town for 3 days!
( Health-related stuff )
For first thursday we (Joe Bill Emily Simeon and myself) stopped by a gallery showing bikes made in portland, and toured a new open-house office building (which used to be a warehouse). We almost went to the ZGF (architecture firm) opening party but it was a little too swank for us, so we went and had dinner at Ringler's Annex and then went back home. I split off from the group, grabbed my bike, and walked it from 9th/Flanders to 6th/Main to put it on the bike rack on the front of a 14 bus. Walking through Portland just after dusk is nice. Maybe it was the 3 iced teas :)

Tonight we watched Push, which was confusing. But it was also neat to see. I want to make a tabletop RPG based on it. Same with the end of Wall-E.

We watched Doctor Who: The Invisible Enemy, Episode 3 with dinner tonight. Miniaturized clones of The Doctor and Leela roamed around the actual Doctor's brain, looking for the Nucleus of the Swarm.

So, we didn't quite wake up early enough to pick up groceries and the hiking guide, drive out to the coast, complete the hike, and then drive up to Astoria on time to visit the Columbia River museum. Which is a bummer cause I was looking forward to it. I'm feeling a lot better today than yesterday, and even better now than earlier today.

Something happened last night that has me reexamining myself. I don't want to divulge any specifics, and maybe this is just a bump in the road... but things have got to change in order to stay on this road.
Semi-related: I'm going to start using my LJ more often, as a fitness/weight-loss log. I've already been posting things publicly about bike rides and morning walks, but I'm going to start using the space to track my progress with weigh-ins and so forth. I'll be careful to use cut-tags, but I don't want to prevent people who are not LJ-members from being able to see my progress and commenting so I'm not going to make it a friends group. I'm going for full disclosure on weight, activities, adherence to diet... and it would really help me a lot to have feedback from those who care about me and my happiness.
So! I look forward to any support I can get. Thanks for your understanding.

Ride today
I wanted to get a closer look at (and some pictures of) the railroad bridge between the Fremont and St.Johns bridges.
My route took me across the St. Johns bridge, and I think that was the first time I had ever crossed it... maybe. It's possible I had done so a long time ago and just forgotten. When I reached the west side of the Willamette, I debated whether to continue northward to Sauvie Island, but in retrospect I'm glad that I didn't. Tiiiired. Next time I'll get there or to Kelly Point Park. We'll see.
I brought extra water and a pbj (which always tastes wonderful in the middle of a bike ride) and a banana. My legs are tired and I might have gotten a little sunburnt. Not too badly, though.
Also, I stopped at REI on the way back and bought a pair of shades and some fingerless bicycle gloves. Perhaps REI should have been a stop on the way out but at least I'll have them for next time.
It's time for a shower and about a gallon of water to drink. :u

Up to friend's house
Back from friend's house
Felt headachey. Shouldn't drink the night before a bike ride unless I drink enough water to float away.

Overheard through the window at about 11:50am.
"Shut up! If there's anybody in that apartment building who is responsible for that dog, I'd like you to make an effort to stop its barking! It's been barking since 4! A.! M.!"
Admittedly, the barking is a little annoying but not enough for me to want to shout at people.

I went for a 30-mile bike ride today, and it took me about 2h50m. My legs are tired and my throat is itchy. I betcha that I'm going to be ungodly sore tomorrow. But otherwise, it was fun and I'm looking forward to longer rides or shorter times for the same ride.
Next time I should bring that Bike There map and more water. And maybe a snack.

Couple of days ago I went for a 12 mile bike ride, today I went for an 18 mile ride
If you include the ride earlier today to the farmers' market and the kitchen store, I've probably gone 28 miles today, which isn't bad for someone as out of shape as meeeeeeeee.
Now I feel like eating a steak. :o

My junior composition recital will be held this Friday, May 29th at 6:00pm!
It's at Portland State University in Cramer Hall room 453. I can provide more explicit directions if necessary.
My recital features music that I wrote for solo viola (as performed by extraordinary violist, Joël Belgique!)
Cello with electronics, String quartet, and Oboe/Nintendo duet! There will also be an animation by Zaratustra (who is awesome).
And between pieces with instrumentalists, I'll press play and some small computer-music works will fill the gaps for your enjoyment.
I will be teamed up with the awesome Amy Hanson, who is presenting her Senior recital and has soundtrack music, electronic music, and other surprises.
Come one, come all, bring your friends, it should be illuminating (or at least entertaining!)
